(CAN) Hells Angels threaten lawsuit against Saskatoon company

Three members of the Hells Angels in Saskatoon are threatening legal action against the owner of a local mining company who fired them this past summer, CBC's iTeam has learned.

Dean Bell, Larry Booth and Scott Fedorwick are claiming damages against Leonard Banga of Xtreme Mining and Demolition Inc. All three identify themselves as members of the motorcycle club.

They’re claiming damages against Banga caused by “defamatory statements, wrongful dismissal, breach of contract, intentional interference with economic relations and inducing breach of contract.”

Angels say the club is getting a bad rap

The bikers hired a Vancouver law firm. Their lawyer has given Banga until January 10 to resolve the issues identified in a five-page letter.

The letter gives a behind-the-scenes glimpse into a falling out between Banga and the Hells Angels. Banga had employed a number of Hells Angels at his company, which does explosive work in potash mines across the province.

The letter arrived on the eve of a court case involving a former Hells Angel, Jesse Bitz. He is appearing in provincial court this morning for a preliminary hearing in connection to allegations that he threatened to kill Banga. It's alleged the threat was made after Banga fired Bitz from Xtreme Mining.

The Angels contend that they lost their jobs because of a dispute between Banga and Bitz – and that Jesse Bitz has since been kicked out of the club.

Banga changed his hiring policies at Xtreme six months after his dispute with Bitz. All 200 employees were forced to reapply under the new hiring guidelines, which called on the workers to undergo a criminal record check and declare that they are not members of a criminal organization.

“Since Bitz had been gone for six months by this point and the Hells Angels in XMD’s employ were all senior employees well liked by their co-workers and clients, the statements made by Banga as well as their effect damaged our clients’ reputations at work and in the community,” the letter said.

It said the men are unable to get work in the mining industry because other companies are now adopting similar employment policies as developed by Banga.

'The statements made by Banga as well as their effect damaged our clients’ reputations at work and in the community.'

AN alleged outlaw motorcycle gang member arrested over a hotel stabbing has been formally refused bail in Dubbo Local Court.

Michael Lentini, 38, from the Newcastle suburb of Edgeworth, is being held in Cessnock Correctional Centre on charges of drug possession, using a prohibited weapon without a permit, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, using an offensive weapon to commit an indictable offence and affray.

Police allege the offences occurred outside a hotel in Bandulla Street, Mendooran at 10.45pm on September 7.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - A 37-year-old Birmingham man has been arrested and charged with murder in a November fatal shooting outside a house where bikers meet.

Brandy Davis, of Fairfield, is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on $75,000 bond, Birmingham police spokesman Sgt. Johnny Williams Jr. said.

Davis is charged in the Nov. 18 shooting death of 37-year-old Terry Towns, of Birmingham.

Towns was shot to death in the 900 block of 11th Court West, near Arkadelphia Road and Interstate 20/59, at a house that police said served as a meeting place for a biker group. He was shot around 8:30 p.m. and pronounced dead at the scene.

(AUS) Hells Angels king-hit by strip club shutdown

EXCLUSIVE: A HIGH-PROFILE King St strip club linked to the Hells Angels has been driven out of business by police.

Chief Commissioner Ken Lay has warned that more will go the way of Dallas Showgirls if they do not sever ties with outlaw motorcycle gangs.

Mr Lay said that venue served as an unofficial city clubhouse for members.

Entry to one room in the building was restricted to Hells Angels, with patched members standing at the door to turn away anyone else.

Police had for months applied the blowtorch to the venue, taking action over even the most minor infractions.

"It was simply in-your-face policing," Mr Lay said.

"It's just being there, making sure people are aware of their obligations, holding people to account. When police are constantly visiting a premises where Hells Angels drink, they get uncomfortable.

"We didn't think it was within the spirit of the Liquor Licensing Act, them behaving how they did there," he said.

Dallas Showgirls closed last month. It regularly promoted Hells Angels events and was the starting point for a foreign tourist's nightmare bashing ordeal several years ago.

The man allegedly turned up at Showgirls claiming to be from a foreign Hells Angels chapter, but suspicion grew he was lying. He was allegedly invited to the gang's Thomastown clubhouse then bashed and tortured.

Supt Brett Guerin said an intelligence assessment compiled by the anti-bikie Echo taskforce had led to police firming up several venues' links to outlaw bikie gangs.

In the case of Dallas Showgirls, this was confirmed by covert work from members of the public order response team before the venue was regularly made the subject of checks by uniformed police.

Supt Guerin said subsequent feedback from Dallas Showgirls was that these visits were not welcomed.

"They told us that by our presence, their patronage was declining," he said.

Supt Guerin said police had made applications about the licences of two other inner-Melbourne clubs because of their operators' links to bikies.

He said police were also placing venue security under scrutiny because of its potential to operate on behalf of the gangs and dictate criminal activity inside. "He who controls the door controls the floor," he said.

Mr Lay said scrutinising licensed venues was only one element of a "brains and brawn" assault on bikie gangs.

Applying forensic accountancy methods and legal expertise was part of the "brains" factor - and the "brawn" was disrupting the bikies and dismantling their fortresses.

(AUS) Three of five alleged bikies will spend Christmas in prison

IT WILL be a bleak Christmas for three families of the alleged bikies dubbed the "Yandina Five" after their lengthy bail applications were rejected.

Paul Jeffery Lansdowne, 57, Steven Michael Smith, 28, and Joshua Shane Carew, 30, were unsuccessful in their bail applications and will spend the festive season behind bars.

Both Smith and Carew have links to the Fraser Coast.

However, Queensland's chief magistrate Tim Carmody granted bail to Scott Michael Conly, 36, and Dan Whale, 26, on Friday albeit under very strict conditions.

The five shot to prominence earlier this month after they were charged under the tough new Vicious Lawless Association Disestablishment laws after being caught having a beer together at the Yandina Hotel on November 1.

Under the new laws, it is illegal for alleged criminal motorcycle gang members to associate together in groups of three or more.

Police have alleged all five men have strong links to bikie organisations on the Sunshine Coast, Fraser Coast and Beenleigh.

In handing down his determinations individually Mr Carmody told Conly he was only going home because the case against him was weaker. Dan Whale, was granted bail after his 74-year-old grandmother came to his rescue and said he could stay with her at her Caloundra unit.

All five will appear in court again on January 6.

(AUS) Taxpayers spend $70,000 improving anti-bikie politicians' homes

Taxpayers have footed the bill for almost $40,000 worth of security upgrades at Premier Campbell Newman's family home in the wake of the state government's crackdown on criminal motorcycle gangs.

Fairfax Media can reveal improvements to Mr Newman's inner-city Windsor home, including upgrades to security screens, CCTV, external lighting, alarms, locksmith work and intercoms, have cost $38,925.

The cost of similar improvements to Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie's Sunshine Coast home was $9759, while security upgrades to Police Minister Jack Dempsey's Bundaberg home are estimated to cost about $20,000.

The cost of additional police protection, including patrols around the elected officials' homes, is understood to cost a significant amount of money.

However, the Queensland Police Service is remaining tight-lipped about the cost.

When asked for the cost of additional security measures for Messrs Newman, Dempsey and Bleijie, the QPS took two days to provide a single sentence response.

"To ensure the ongoing safety of dignitaries and public office holders the QPS is not in a position to discuss the security arrangements or associated costs," a police spokeswoman said.

Since the introduction of the state's Vicious Lawless Association Disestablishment legislation, which has been publicly championed by Messrs Newman, Bleijie and Dempsey, security has been stepped up at State Parliament and other government buildings.
The security concerns are not unfounded.

Mr Newman's home address, which he shares with his wife Lisa and two teenage daughters, was published on social media last month on a site purportedly supporting motorcycle clubs.

Mr and Mrs Newman's mobile phone numbers were also published, leading to a series of harassing calls to them both.

(AUS) Police watch on bikie gxxgs

TASMANIA Police is attending bikie clubs to deal with anti-social behaviour and alleged criminal activity.

Assistant Commissioner Donna Adams said the police service was also keeping a watch on the licensed venues and clubs operated by outlaw motorcycle gangs (OMCG).

"The over-representation of OMCG members and affiliates in a range of criminal and other anti- social activities is of concern to police," she said.

"Police will continue to object to OMCG applications for liquor permits and licences where it's believed they are likely to breach liquor licensing legislation."

A number of bikie venues and clubs operate openly in Launceston.

Satan's Riders run the Handle Bar in Frederick Street while the Outlaws have a clubhouse at Invermay.

The Devil's Henchmen have a club at Mowbray.

Australia's largest bikie gang the Rebels had a clubhouse in Merino Street, Kings Meadows.

"Members and associates of OMCGs have been arrested in Tasmania for crimes ranging from drug trafficking, common assault, breaches of public order and firearms matters with illicit drugs, cash and firearms seizures," the assistant commissioner said.

"Tasmania Police uses all available legislative powers to disrupt the illegal activities of outlaw motorcycle gangs."

The state government has previously introduced laws banning the fortification of premises and this year passed legislation to target criminal profits.

(AUS) Anti-bikie laws outrage family of Indigenous prisoner

A Queensland woman claims her husband has been unfairly treated in jail because of his past association with a motorcycle club.

Family and friends of Kevin Hill last night gathered outside the Queensland Corrective Services Department offices in Brisbane, to protest the way he was being treated in prison.

The Queensland Government, under new "anti-bikie laws", moved motorcycle club members to the Woodford Correction Centre about 100 kilometres north of Brisbane.

They have been separated and placed into solitary confinement.

Kevin Hill was jailed for assault and sent back to jail for breaching parole.

But Grace Hill said her husband had been moved to solitary at Woodford because of his past connections with bike club The Bandidos.

"He was a model prisoner; he used to train guide dogs and do the Aboriginal paintings for Fred Hollows Foundation," she said.

"It's wrong."

"Why should he be put under [the new anti-bikie laws] and do time for something he hasn't done?"

Gabriel Buckley, President of the Queensland Liberal Democrats political party and a candidate at the upcoming Redcliffe by-election, said several civil liberties groups were sprouting up in Queensland in response to the state government's law-and-order policies.

Mr Buckley, who recently organised a protest in Brisbane which attracted 2000 people, said prisoners with bike-club links were now doing it tough.

"People are certainly being subject to a lot harsher treatment," he said.

"Kevin is a prime example."

NITV News asked Corrective Services Queensland if Kevin Hill was placed in solitary confinement because he was formerly associated with a bike club.

In a statement, the department said:"Queensland Corrective Services is not in a position to provide specific information about the management of individual prisoners."

(AUS) Accused meth dealer to spend Christmas in jail as raid uncovers links to Hells Angels bikie gxxg

AN accused meth dealer from Ipswich will spend Christmas behind bars after a raid linked him to the Hells Angels.

The 30-year-old Brassall man was charged on Tuesday with two counts of supply after police allegedly busted him at home with a stash of "ice" worth $42,000 on the street.

Detectives from anti-bikie squad Maxima seized 1.5 ounces (42g) of crystal methamphetamine along with $1190 cash, some cannabis and "other drug preparation paraphernalia".

Detective Chief Superintendent Mick Niland of anti-bikie squad Maxima said police would oppose bail on the grounds the man was a participant in a criminal motorcycle gang.

Police released photos of Hells Angels supporters clothing found in a search of the Glenelg Drive home.

Supt Niland said the man was not linked to another alleged Hells Angels ice trafficking syndicate, which police say ran up to five ounces a week out of an East Brisbane locksmiths.

The man, who also faces one count of possessing ammunition, is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on December 27.

(AUS) Police take aim as bikies build their empires

$

RUMBLING just beneath the surface of everyday life is a threat that knows no boundaries.

Outlaw bikie gang compounds are increasingly springing up in our suburbs, while volleys of bullets have been exchanged from Brunswick to Seaford.

Just as 2013 has seen the bikies emerge to a new prominence, escalating outlaw ambitions and simmering tensions promise to make 2014 the Year of the Bikie.

Bikie gangs - now numbering at least 22 in Victoria - are fighting each other, they are working to infiltrate authorities including the police and government agencies, and they are expanding into every conceivable money-earning venture, legal or illegal.

As the "big" gangs have moved towards outright hostility, the public is at risk of being caught in the crossfire. They have more than replaced the "gangland" underworld made famous by Tony Mokbel, Carl Williams and the Carlton Crew.

Much of the business they are fighting for is as old and traditional as the Mafia - extortion, standover rackets (including debt collection and brothel protection), gun-running, car theft, security, strip-club and nightclub operations.

But they are also enmeshed in the construction industry, the docks and unions.

Then there is the amphetamines and methamphetamines market and the accompanying ice, which is becoming an epidemic.

The Rebels, founded in Queensland, are pushing hard internationally and even trying to delve into the casino market.

The combined clout of all the gangs, their financial interests nationwide - legitimate and illegitimate - rival the Macquarie Bank. The Australian Crime Commission, through Operation Attero, estimates the bikie industry in Australia is now worth $10 billion.

The number of "fully patched'' members in Victoria is estimated at 1200 and growing.

All of this fuels the expectation that 2014 will see a "one per cent'' club deemed an organised crime group and banned, and fortifications protecting clubhouses will be torn down.

The clubs are already lawyered up.

Hotly contested hearings are being held over the police force's seizure of licensed guns from bikies across the state.

Some have been handed back.

Most weren't.

Early in 2013 it became clear the undersized anti-bikie Echo taskforce would need reinforcements.

By mid-year, two anti-corruption taskforces - Eagle and Keel - and two major long-term operations to disrupt the bikies and their associated money-making activities - Resound and Razon - would be running side by side.

In October the force would launch Operation Redefine - which saw 700 police officers raiding the homes of every Hells Angel and associate they could find.

It was the Hells Angels, the oldest of the major clubs in Victoria, who pushed the limit to prompt that police response, unprecedented in the state's history.

Not only would the Angels agitate the other gangs, mainly the Bandidos and Comancheros, but their attitude infuriated the force.

The tipping point was an ambush shooting in Melton in March, where unsuspecting Bandido Toby Mitchell - known to mix with police and a Richmond footballer - was shot in the arm.

The Angels - along with affiliate club Red Devils - were responsible and the Bandidos declared war.

Plans were hatched for reprisals against Red Devil "person of interest'' Daniel Pegoraro, but Chief Commissioner Ken Lay would not stand for it.

He swiftly set up Operation Resound to swarm over the bikies' activities, but there were other worrying issues about to hit police.

Within a month it was revealed that some officers were associating with bikies who were attempting to corrupt them - there were even fears some bikies might be in the force.

By the end of April an ashen-faced Mr Lay would announce the force was investigating breaches of its LEAP computer system dating back three years, with sensitive files allegedly being sold to bikies.

One officer from Fitzroy police station would be the focus of the 31-man Taskforce Keel, but 10 other officers would also come under scrutiny with charges and suspensions being dealt out.

The investigation continues.

And although an all-out street war between the Hells Angels and Bandidos was averted, there would be clubhouses and bikie-owned gyms and tattoo shops in the firing line.

Comanchero president Mick Murray took the helm after Amad "Jay'' Malkoun went overseas, and within months his Nitro gym in Hallam and tattoo parlour in Dandenong would be peppered with bullets.

A makeshift petrol bomb was placed inside the gym but did not explode.

To make matters worse, Comanchero Williamstown chapter president Faafatia Faaloia was shot in what is likely to have been a domestic situation.

In what seemed to be a tit-for-tat response, the Hells Angels' Darkside chapter in Seaford was shot at.

Police believe those rounds were fired by the same gun, most likely shot by one of the Hells Angels' members.

A search for the military-style weapon being used proved fruitless.

Military weapons, including an M1 carbine, remain in the hands of the outlaws despite the October raids, which led to veteran Hells Angel Peter "Skitzo'' Hewat being charged with more offences on top of allegedly belting an elderly woman in a dispute over his small dog.

The conspicuous Daniel Pegoraro survived a shooting in the driveway of his Epping home in November, with one stray bullet piercing the house where his children were asleep.

He is now walking with the aid of a cane.

Other leading figures in the bikie scene would also make headlines.

Founding Hells Angel Chris Coelho would leave the club as the new brigade, such as Denis Basic, made an impact.

Basic is also facing time in jail after being charged with firearms offences.

The Angels, however, have already had to "play ball'' with the force. As the first club to be slapped with an anti-fortification notice at their Thomastown chapter, they came to an agreement to tear down their own walls and remodel the building in a Federation style.

Dallas Showgirls, the high-profile King St strip club linked to the Angels, has been driven out of business under the police's tough stance.

And Chief Commissioner Lay has warned more will go the same way of if they do not sever ties with outlaw motorcycle gangs.

A Victoria Police brief of evidence is ready to be handed to a Supreme Court judge to deem a "one per cent'' club an organised crime group in 2014 - effectively banning them.

But expect the Hells Angels, Rebels, Bandidos, Comancheros and new guys the Mongols (and all their affiliates) to challenge any such bid.

There is too much power, turf and money at stake.

YOLO COUNTY (CBS13) — A former California Highway Patrol dispatcher who allegedly helped her Hells Angels husband commit crimes faced a judge in court on Monday.

Defense attorneys for Sarah Killough and her husband Dennis Killough argued they have yet to see any real evidence to keep the couple behind bars.

The couple is facing a laundry list of federal charges from gun running to drug offenses.

Investigators say Dennis Killough sold undercover agents stolen military equipment, weapons and drugs.

Sarah Killough is accused of warning her husband and other Hell’s Angels members about the federal investigation.

Lisa Lance, Sarah Killough’s defense attorney, says there hasn’t been any evidence presented to show the couple should remain behind bars, except for an investigative interview with the husband.

“We didn’t have discovery that should have been provided by the prosecution,” Lance said.

The prosecution declined to speak on camera, but stated in court it has overwhelming evidence, which it will provide to the defense soon.

Until then, the preliminary hearing for the couple will be continued until Jan. 14. The couple is still being held without bail at the Yolo County Jail.

COP OR TRIGGER-HAPPY CRIMINAL? In my opinion: by W.T. “RoadBlock” Harrell

$
0
0

Bureaucrats and cops in Holly Hill, Florida just don’t seem to understand the law, or maybe they feel that they are above it. Last year, they told a veteran he couldn’t fly American military flags. Now, in this case, another family pet has paid a heavy price because a trigger-happy police officer refused to follow the law.

Two days after Christmas, Richard Stotler heard a loud knocking on his front door. When he answered, he was confronted by Holly Hill police officers with a misdemeanor bench warrant for a woman for prostitution. Stotler explained no such person lived at his address, and he didn’t know the woman they were seeking.
Instead of bothering to check that they had the right address, the Holly Hill police continued to demand that Stotler produce the woman. When he saw they weren’t going to be reasonable, he told them to leave, and went back inside his home.

Instead of leaving, the Holly Hill police officers slipped around to his back yard, pried his locked gate open and shot his dog Lady three times.

When Stotler ran out to see what the shooting was about, the Holly Hill police officers told him to get on his knees. They put him down on the ground, handcuffed him, and locked him in a police car. Meanwhile, his frantic wife was desperately trying to stop Lady’s bleeding and save her life.

They eventually removed the cuffs and let Stotler out of the cop car. He was then allowed to load his severely wounded dog in a car and take her to a vet.

The cops told him not to worry, the vet bill would be on them. After pumping three bullets into a dog on private property while allegedly serving a prostitution warrant? How considerate. And why was that hooker so important that a wannabe-SWAT team had to go after her? Couldn't they have checked a few records to see that she no longer owned the house?

Before I go further, I want to let readers know that Lady survived getting shot in the face, head and stomach, no thanks to Holly Hill’s “Pistol Pete.”

The problem with trigger-happy cops murdering family pets in their own homes has escalated dramatically over the past few years, and the chicken-shit thugs continue to get away with it.

It’s past time to stop this abuse of power they routinely practice and hold them to the same standards they hold the citizens they are sworn to protect and serve.

Law enforcement IS necessary in our society. Without it, our wives and kids couldn’t safely walk down the street to a grocery store. But when those sworn to uphold the law are the ones who make it unsafe for people and pets in our own homes, those responsible MUST be held accountable.

Every member of law enforcement takes an oath to protect and defend the constitution before they are given a badge. Law enforcement members must be trained to carry out their duties in a constitutional manner. When they fail to do so, it’s the duty of the citizen to make them wish they had. The law is a two edged weapon and applies to everyone, no matter who or what you are.

Best wishes to Lady, and her owners, on a recovery for all.

A lawyer for Victorian men charged under Queensland's controversial new anti-association laws says his clients were targeted simply because they were "young, male and had tattoos".

The five Victorian men were arrested on the Gold Coast while shopping for ice cream.

Under new Queensland laws, it's an offence for three or more people from criminal organisations to be knowingly in a public place at the same time.

Police claim at least four of the five are outlaw motorcycle club members.

But lawyer Bill Potts, representing two of the men, says only two have clear links.

"They are being charged, effectively, with being friends in a public place, buying an ice cream," Mr Potts told 3AW Breakfast.

"They were not wearing colours, they were not armed, they had no money, they had no drugs.

"Despite extensive searches, no evidence of criminality or criminal offence that we would know was found to exist."

The men, charged two days after they were arrested, will today be taken to a Queensland prison where they will be in lock down for 23 hours per day, with "no human contact, no television, and very little reading matter", Mr Potts said.

"We now face in Australia offences of merely being associated - that is, talking to someone. Being in their presence.

"I just really wonder if that's the society we really want to live in."

"Australians should be against oppression."

(AUS) Bikies banned from group sex in public

$

Bikies who engage in group sex anywhere other than private homes can now be charged in Queensland as part of the state's tough new anti-bikie laws.

The revelation came after the state government answered a question posted on Premier Campbell Newman's Facebook page about outlaw motorcycle gang members and group sex.

The constituent, asking about the VLAD (Vicious Lawless Association Disestablishment) laws wrote:

"Do they make a ménage a trois illegal and if so where this leaves orgies and swingers clubs?"

A staffer for Premier Newman then responded:

"The offence is for three or more participants in a criminal organisation to meet in public. So yes, it would be illegal for three criminal gang members to have sex in public."

Lawyers, however, have questioned the validity of the laws and why they were reaching into people's bedrooms.

Criminal lawyer Bill Potts told News Limited: "There's no room under the bed for Mr Newman or the Government and they should think about why they are reaching into people's private lives."

SPRINGFIELD -- Day two of jury selection in Adam Lee Hall's triple murder trial ended with 14 jurors seated -- but one of those jurors may ask to be removed from service.

The morning in Hampden Superior Court began with the loss of a juror chosen on Monday after she told the court she learned someone she knew had ties to the Hells Angels and that a family friend in law enforcement had worked on the case. Judge C. Jeffrey Kinder excused her from service. The defendant is a former member of the Hells Angels.

On Tuesday afternoon, another female juror called the clerk's office and said she was having misgivings about sitting on the case after speaking with her husband. That woman will be in court next Monday to discuss the matter before Kinder, who is overseeing the case.

Kinder on Tuesday decided "out of an abundance of caution" to pick three more jurors, for a total of 17, in case the woman is released from duty.

Hall, 36, of Peru, is facing 22 charges, including multiple counts of murder and kidnapping from three separate incidents from 2009 through 2011. He allegedly beat David Glasser with a baseball bat in July 2009 in retaliation for a suspected theft and then tried to discredit Glasser as a witness by framing him for a fake armed robbery in New York state.

In August 2011, weeks before he was to testify against Hall, Glasser and his roommate, Edward Frampton, and their friend Robert Chadwell, all of Pittsfield, disappeared. Their dismembered bodies were found in Becket days later.

Prosecutors say Hall and two others kidnapped and murdered Glasser to prevent him from testifying. The other two were killed to eliminate any witnesses, prosecutors say.

Hall and his co-defendants, David Chalue, 46, of North Adams, and Caius Veiovis, 32, of Pittsfield, have strenuously denied the allegations and remain in jail without bail.

The trials were separated from each other, with Hall's case the first to be tried. Proceedings were moved to Hampden Superior Court in Springfield because of pretrial publicity in the Berkshires.

Jury selection was slow going at first as potential jurors were weeded out.

Among those not chosen for the jury were a man and a woman who said they knew Hall personally. The woman said she knew the defendant from local motorcycle events and wouldn't be comfortable sitting on the jury. The man said he was biased against Hall because of "past interactions." Hall looked surprised by this.

Others who didn't make it on the jury included a woman who said she has been "couch hopping," a man who said he was the follower of the infamous Satanist Anton LaVey and another who asked to bow out to take care of his geese and chickens. He was excused after admitting he wouldn't be able to fairly judge Hall's testimony if the defendant chose to take the stand.

Hall's attorney, Alan J. Black, once again renewed his motion to dismiss the entire panel, including seated jurors, after one potential juror told the court he heard about the case while sitting in the jury pool room when a news broadcast mentioned the Hall trial. On Monday, there were other related problems after one woman admitted telling other prospective jurors that she heard Hall was being housed at the Hampden County Jail & House of Correction and another woman said she and others had discussed the case in direct violation of the judge's order.

Kinder denied Black's motion, saying that the issue wasn't whether a juror has heard about the case, but whether they could overlook any reports and be a fair and unbiased juror.

By the afternoon, 14 people -- black, white, some younger, some older, and from a variety of backgrounds -- had been seated. Jury selection continues Thursday with the evidentiary portion of the trial set to begin next Monday.
